Beta-Glucan (Oat / Yeast)
Also known as: Beta-1,3/1,6-glucan · Oat beta-glucan · WGP beta-glucan (yeast-derived)
A soluble fibre from oats and yeast with the strongest evidence of any dietary fibre for cholesterol reduction (FDA-approved claim). Yeast-derived beta-glucans additionally activate innate immunity via Dectin-1 receptors.

What Is Beta-Glucan (Oat / Yeast)?
Beta-glucans are polysaccharides with beta-glycosidic bonds found in oat bran, barley, and yeast cell walls. They have distinct properties by source: oat beta-glucan is primarily a cholesterol-lowering viscous fibre; yeast (Saccharomyces) beta-glucan (particularly 1,3/1,6 structure) activates innate immune cells via Dectin-1 receptors on macrophages and neutrophils.
How It Works: The Science
Oat beta-glucan forms a viscous gel in the gut, binding bile acids (reducing cholesterol reabsorption — forcing hepatic LDL uptake for new bile acid synthesis) and blunting glucose absorption (viscosity reduces rate of digestion). Yeast 1,3/1,6-beta-glucan binds Dectin-1 on macrophages, neutrophils, and NK cells, priming them for faster pathogen recognition and killing.

Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
3–10g / day
Oat: 3g/day (split across meals) for cholesterol. Yeast: 250–500mg/day WGP (Wellmune) for immune. Can obtain oat beta-glucan from 70g oats or 40g oat bran.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Excellent safety profile as a food-derived fibre. GI bloating initially — standard fibre adaptation. No significant drug interactions.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Universally beneficial — especially those with high cholesterol, blood sugar concerns, and frequent infections. The most evidence-backed natural cholesterol-lowering fibre supplement.
