Joint & Connective Tissue
Boswellia Serrata
Also known as: American frankincense · Shallaki · AKBA · Boswellic acids
A resin from the Boswellia tree containing AKBA — a potent 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor. Reduces leukotriene-driven inflammation in joints and gut without the GI side effects of NSAIDs.
Effective Dose
100–250mg AKBA / day (or 1000–3000mg crude extract)

What Is Boswellia Serrata?
Boswellia serrata resin has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years for inflammatory conditions. Modern science identified acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) as the most potent anti-inflammatory component. Unlike NSAIDs (which block COX enzymes), AKBA specifically inhibits 5-lipoxygenase, blocking leukotriene synthesis.
How It Works: The Science
5-LOX converts arachidonic acid to leukotriene B4 (LTB4) — a potent pro-inflammatory mediator in joints, airways, and the gut. AKBA inhibits 5-LOX with high specificity, reducing LTB4 production without the prostaglandin suppression (and associated GI damage) of NSAIDs. Boswellic acids also inhibit cathepsin G and human leukocyte elastase — enzymes that degrade joint cartilage.

Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
100–250mg AKBA / day (or 1000–3000mg crude extract)
100–250mg AKBA or 1000–3000mg crude Boswellia extract standardised to 65% boswellic acids. AprèsFlex and Wokvel are patented, enhanced bioavailability forms. Take with meals — fat improves absorption.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Excellent safety profile — far fewer GI side effects than NSAIDs. Rare nausea or acid reflux. No hepatotoxicity at recommended doses.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Anyone with inflammatory joint conditions wanting a natural NSAID alternative. Particularly useful for those who cannot tolerate NSAIDs due to GI issues.
