Stimulants & Focus

DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol)

Also known as: Deanol · Dimethylethanolamine

●○○Limited Evidence

A choline-related compound found in fish. Modest evidence for cognitive benefits. Converts to choline less efficiently than Alpha-GPC but has a long history of use.

Effective Dose

100–400mg / day

per clinical evidence

What Is DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol)?

DMAE is a naturally occurring compound found in fish, particularly anchovies and sardines. It has been studied since the 1950s for cognitive and mood effects. As a choline precursor, it is less efficient than Alpha-GPC or CDP-choline, and its actual mechanism of raising brain ACh is debated.

How It Works: The Science

DMAE was long thought to convert to choline and then acetylcholine. More recent evidence suggests DMAE inhibits choline uptake into non-neuronal cells, redirecting choline toward neural acetylcholine synthesis. It may also act as a direct weak muscarinic receptor agonist.

Primary Mechanism

Choline precursor (weak), acetylcholine modulation

Evidence-Based Benefits

May improve focus and mood in some individuals

limited

Dimpfel et al. (2003) — EEG changes consistent with increased alertness

Topically reduces skin laxity

limited

Grossman (2005) — topical DMAE improved skin firmness in facial skin

Dosage Guide

Effective Dose

100–400mg / day

100–400mg/day. Effects are subtle. Not recommended as a primary cognitive supplement — choose Alpha-GPC or CDP-choline for stronger, better-evidenced choline support.

Safety Profile & Side Effects

Generally safe at recommended doses. Paradoxically causes muscle twitching at high doses due to excessive ACh activity. Not for use during pregnancy (teratogenic signals in animal studies).

Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It

Best for

Who it's for

Those who have already tried Alpha-GPC and want to experiment with alternatives. Not a priority purchase.
