What Is Ecdysterone (β-Ecdysterone)?

β-Ecdysterone is the most abundant ecdysteroid in plants, found in spinach, quinoa, and various herbs. A 2019 human RCT by Isenmann et al. (University of Freie, Berlin) found that 200mg/day produced significantly greater leg-press gains than placebo — an effect that prompted WADA monitoring.

How It Works: The Science

Ecdysterone binds oestrogen receptor beta (ERβ) without androgenic activity, potentially explaining anabolic effects without testosterone-related side effects. It activates PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling in muscle cells, increasing protein synthesis. It also reduces protein degradation via proteasome inhibition in animal models.

Primary Mechanism

Oestrogen receptor beta agonism, mTOR activation

Evidence-Based Benefits

Increases leg-press strength in resistance-trained men

emerging

Isenmann et al. (2019) — 200mg/day for 10 weeks: +17.7% leg press vs +8.0% placebo

May reduce fat mass alongside training

Same trial — trend toward fat reduction; not statistically significant

Dosage Guide

Effective Dose

200–500mg / day

200–500mg/day. The Isenmann trial used 200mg/day with positive results. Higher doses are marketed but not studied in humans. Cyclodextrin complexes may improve absorption.

Safety Profile & Side Effects

No adverse effects reported in the published human trial. No androgenic, oestrogenic, or testosterone-suppressive effects observed at supplemental doses.

Who it's for
