What Is Moringa (Moringa oleifera)?
Moringa oleifera leaves are exceptionally nutrient-dense, containing all essential amino acids, vitamin C, calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium. Isothiocyanates (particularly moringin) are the primary bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and glucose-lowering activity — acting via Nrf2 pathway activation.
How It Works: The Science
Moringin (4-alpha-L-rhamnosyloxy-benzyl isothiocyanate) activates Nrf2, upregulating antioxidant enzymes (HO-1, SOD, glutathione peroxidase). It inhibits NF-κB (reducing inflammatory cytokines) and inhibits alpha-glucosidase (reducing glucose absorption). Chlorogenic acid and quercetin in moringa contribute additional antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

Isothiocyanate antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, blood sugar modulation
Evidence-Based Benefits
Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
2–7g / day
2–7g dried leaf powder daily. Can be added to smoothies. Full benefits build over weeks of consistent use. Fresh leaves have 4× higher activity than dried — therapeutic effects require standardised leaf powder.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Very safe as a food. Root and bark extracts may have abortifacient effects — avoid during pregnancy. Leaf powder is safe. Check for contaminants in commercial products.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Nutritional gap filling for those with poor dietary diversity, blood sugar management, and anti-inflammatory support — particularly in developing-world contexts where moringa grows readily.
