Chlorella
Also known as: Chlorella vulgaris · Chlorella pyrenoidosa · Green algae
A freshwater green algae rich in chlorophyll, CGF, and complete protein. Binds heavy metals for excretion, modulates immunity, and improves cholesterol. The cell wall must be broken for bioavailability.

What Is Chlorella?
Chlorella is a single-celled green algae with a complete protein profile (58% protein), high chlorophyll content, B vitamins, iron, and a unique nucleotide-peptide complex called chlorella growth factor (CGF). Unlike spirulina, chlorella has a rigid cell wall that must be mechanically broken during processing for nutrients to be bioavailable.
How It Works: The Science
Chlorophyll and its metabolites chelate heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium) in the GI tract, reducing absorption and facilitating excretion. CGF (a mixture of nucleic acids, amino acids, polysaccharides) stimulates immune cell proliferation and wound healing. Chlorella polysaccharides activate macrophages via TLR-2 and TLR-4.
Primary Mechanism
Chlorella growth factor (CGF), chlorophyll, heavy metal chelation
Evidence-Based Benefits
Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
3–10g / day
3–10g/day broken-cell wall powder or tablets. Start at 3g — detox symptoms (headache, fatigue) possible initially as heavy metals mobilise. Always choose 'broken cell wall' or 'cracked cell' chlorella.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Same contamination concerns as spirulina (cyanotoxins, heavy metals from growth water). Must use broken cell wall form — intact cell wall is not digested. May interact with warfarin (vitamin K content).
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Those with heavy metal exposure (dental amalgams, high fish consumption, industrial exposure), vegans wanting nutrient density, and those wanting a natural immune and detox support.
