What Is Lion's Mane Mushroom?
Lion's mane is a distinctive white mushroom whose fruiting body and mycelium both contain neuroactive compounds. Hericenones (from the fruiting body) and erinacines (from mycelium) are unique diterpene compounds that cross the blood-brain barrier and stimulate production of nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
How It Works: The Science
Hericenones and erinacines stimulate NGF synthesis in neurons and astrocytes. NGF promotes neuronal survival, axon growth, and myelination. This mechanism supports regeneration of damaged peripheral nerves and may slow the neuronal loss associated with cognitive ageing. BDNF upregulation supports synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis.

Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
500–3000mg / day
500–3000mg/day. Fruiting body extracts (with ≥30% beta-glucans) are preferred over mycelium on grain (high starch content, low active compounds). Use hot water or dual extracts to access both beta-glucans and hericenones.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Excellent safety profile. Rare reports of skin rash (possible allergic reaction). Not recommended for those with known mushroom allergy.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Cognitively ambitious athletes, older adults concerned with cognitive decline, and those with nerve damage or neuropathy. One of the most evidence-backed supplements for brain health.
