What Is MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)?
MSM is an organosulphur compound naturally found in small amounts in plants, animals, and humans. Sulphur is required for collagen cross-linking, glutathione synthesis, and glycosaminoglycan formation. MSM is one of the few sulphur supplements with clinical evidence for joint pain, exercise recovery, and allergy reduction.
How It Works: The Science
MSM provides bioavailable sulphur for Type I collagen cross-linking (via disulphide bonds) and glycosaminoglycan sulfation. It also donates sulphur for glutathione synthesis, enhancing antioxidant capacity. Anti-inflammatory effects are mediated through NF-κB inhibition and reduction of TNF-α and IL-6. It reduces mast cell activity (relevant for allergies).
