What Is Vinpocetine?
Vinpocetine is a semi-synthetic derivative of vincamine, an alkaloid from the lesser periwinkle (Vinca minor). It is a prescription drug in Hungary (Cavinton) for cognitive disorders and a supplement in the US. It combines vasodilatory, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory effects specific to cerebral tissue.
How It Works: The Science
Vinpocetine selectively inhibits PDE1 (phosphodiesterase type 1) — raising cAMP and cGMP in smooth muscle of cerebral vessels, causing vasodilation and increasing cerebral blood flow. It also inhibits voltage-dependent sodium channels (neuroprotective against ischaemic injury) and reduces NF-κB-mediated neuroinflammation.
Primary Mechanism
PDE1 inhibition → cAMP/cGMP elevation, cerebral vasodilation, sodium channel blockade

Dosage Guide
Effective Dose
15–60mg / day
15–60mg/day in 3 divided doses (5–20mg each) with meals. Fat-soluble — absorption significantly improved with food.
Safety Profile & Side Effects
Generally safe. Mild hypotension possible. Drug interactions with blood thinners and CNS medications. Regulatory status varies — classified as a drug in some countries.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Take It
Cognitive-focused athletes and older adults seeking cerebrovascular support. A niche but genuinely effective nootropic with clinical drug-level evidence.
